Scope and Content Notes
The records consist of documents generated or received by Dr. John W. Chenault, while working with or directing the Crippled Children?s Service and the Infantile Paralysis Center at Tuskegee Institute. The records? date from 1937- 53 and include patient medical records, medical related correspondence, newspaper clippings, inventory records, personnel files, articles, pamphlets and other miscellaneous documents. The records are potentially valuable to those interested in researching medical history, the history of Tuskegee Institute?s hospital programs, the treatment of poliomyelitis-related physical disabilities, and the relationship between state offices and individual medical institutions.
History
John Watson Chenault was born on March 24, 1904 in Sheridan, Wyoming. He received his Bachelor of Science in 1929, Bachelor of Medicine in 1930 and Doctor of Medicine in 1931, all from the University of Minnesota. Chenault was an orthopedic surgeon and served as Director of Orthopedics of the John A. Andrew Memorial Hospital. He served as director of the Infantile Paralysis Center from 1941-42, 1946-47, and 1952-53. Chenault died in 1965
The Crippled Children?s Service, a unit of the John A. Andrew Memorial Hospital at Tuskegee Institute, was established in 1937 by Chenault while serving as Director of Orthopedics. This service was a part of the state?s Crippled Children?s Service run by the Department of Education. It provided clinical and hospital care for disabled children and adults from Alabama who were eligible for care under programs administered by the Alabama State Crippled Children?s Service. The Infantile Paralysis Center opened on January 15, 1941 as another unit of the hospital. The Center provided treatment facilities and services for patients from the southeastern states as well as care for Alabama patients with other orthopedic conditions. Founded with an initial grant from the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, the Center was funded primarily by annual grants. Support also came from the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation. The role of the Center eventually expanded to include rehabilitation services. Records in the collection were generated or received by Dr. Chenault in the course of his work with both units.
