Abstract:

Several newspaper clippings relating to the trial of several white men for the murder of Walter P. Billings, an African-America resident of Sumter County, Alabama, on 1 August 1874, and also a lengthy jury charge by U.S. Circuit Court Judge Ballard decrying violence used by the Ku Klux Klan and other white supremacist organizations against African-Americans.

Scope and Contents note

This collection consists of several newspaper clippings relating to the trial of several white men for the murder of Walter P. Billings, an African-America resident of Sumter County, Alabama, on 1 August 1874, and also a lengthy jury charge by U.S. Curcuit Court Judge Ballard decrying violence used by the Ku Klux Klan and other white supremacist organizations against African-Americans. The clippings were evidently pasted to a series of sheets of paper, but most of them have fallen off, so the organization is no longer clear.
