Consists principally of personal correspondence from Francis Bugbee's family and close friends concerning family and personal news. as well as genealogical materials relating to the Bugbee family and many other Massachusetts and Connecticut families. There is very little business correspondence or any information concerning his years as trustee, judge, or legislator.
Scope and Contents note
This collection consists principally of personal correspondence from Francis Bugbee's family and close friends concerning family and personal news. The genealogical papers are extremely complete for the Bugbee family and many other Massachusetts and Connecticut families who married into the Bugbee family including the Pitcher, Hubbard, Woodward, Perkins, Bushnell, Metcalf, Lothrop, Royce, and Arnold and Hargrove families, along with the Long and Tarrant families of Virginia. There is very little business correspondence or any information concerning his years as trustee, judge, or legislator.

Biographical/Historical note
Francis Bugbee was born in Ashford, Connecticut, on February 18, 1794, the son of Amos Bugbee and Martha Woodward. He graduated from Yale in 1818 and taught in Oxford, Granville County, North Carolina, while studying law under a Judge Badger. In 1820, he was admitted to the bars of North Carolina and Pennsylvania. In January 1821, he moved to Jefferson County, Alabama, where he practiced law. In 1826, he moved to Montgomery and served as a judge there. Among his activities: 1836-71: Trustee of the University of Alabama 1843: Member of the Alabama legislature 1866-69: United States district attorney
A Union man during the Civil War, he was appointed judge of the circuit court under Federal authority. He married Lavinia Hudson Tarrant on July 5, 1827. They had 4 children: Thomas Francis, Julia Malinda, Sallie Gindrat, and Martha Lavinia. He died in Montgomery on April 21, 1877.
