Biographical/Historical note
Luther Fairfax Dashiell was born 5 November 1813, in Maryland. He served as surgeon for the 1st Regiment of Louisiana Volunteers (De Russy’s Regiment of Louisiana Infantry) in the Mexican War and was stationed in the Department of Tampico, Mexico, where he served 1846-1848 (his commission dates from 18 January 1847). During that time, he was engaged in a dispute over his application for the position of Medical Director of the Department of Tampico. In December 1847 he asked for a leave of absence for medical reasons. He was honorably discharged on 20 July 1848. In 1850 he served with a detachment of troops engaged in the removal of Indians in Iowa.
