Scope and Contents note

This collection consists of the letterbook of J.J. (Joseph Judson) Elliott written in Childersburg, Talladega County, Alabama covering 16 February 1900 through 15 November 1902. While there are several business letters in the ledger, the majority (both in length and number) are to Maud Hoskinson of Weogufka, Coosa County, Alabama.

Biographical/Historical note

Joseph J. Elliott was a lumber dealer in Childersburg, Alabama. Born in August 1855 in Alabama, by age 25 he was working in a saw mill in Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. In 1902, at the age of 47, he married Maud Hoskinson, aged 20, of Weogufka, Coosa County, Alabama and continued in the lumber business rising to be president of a lumber company by 1930. The couple lived in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama in the 1910s, 1920s and 1930s.
