Biographical/Historical note

Jennie Maude Shaw, daughter of James S. and Eunice Shaw, was born about 1925. She was a student at the University of Alabama an graduated in 1946 with a Bachelor of Science degree and a certificate in Library Science. In 1945 she received the Grover Cleveland Hall Memorial Award. She married William Baker Flowers on 28 September 1947

William Baker Flowers, son of John Robert and Kathleen Flowers, was born on 5 May 1920. He was also a student at the University of Alabama until leaving school in March 1943 when he enlisted in the Army during World War II. He died in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in September 1975.

Scope and Contents note

The collection contains several items relating to Walter Flowers and Jennie Shaw Flowers when they were students at the University of Alabama in the 1940s. The collection includes UA commencement programs for 1945 and 1946, organizational ribbons for the Student Government Association, the Women's Student Government Association, and Triangle, and an invitation to a dance from the "Girls of Tutwiler". The 1945 commencement program shows that Jennie Maude Shaw was awarded the Grover Cleveland Hall Memorial Award in her junior year and the 1946 program shows that she graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Education degree and a certificate in Library Science.

There is also a library card for William Baker Flowers with a note written across the face of the card "left school 3/18/43".
