Biographical/Historical note
During World War I, President Woodrow Wilson established the Committee on Public Information (CPI) to manage news and encourage domestic support for the war. George Creel, the director of the CPI, organized volunteers to give brief speeches (no more than four minutes) wherever they could get an audience. The group of volunteers became known as the "Four-Minute Men." The Women's division of the Birmingham Four-Minute Men spoke at theaters and public gatherings of women. They also formed a chorus, sang at public events, and marched in parades. The group strongly supported patriotic drives and often spoke on the behalf of the Red Cross. They also participated in patriotic drives. The organization disbanded in February 1919.
