Biographical/Historical note

Eddy Lanier King Gilmore was born in Selma, Alabama on May 28, 1907. He graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology, following which he began a career in journalism at the Atlanta Journal and Constitution, and later moving to the Washington Daily News. In the mid-1930s, he joined the Associated Press, a position that took him to Russia and across the world. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1947 for an interview with Stalin, and it was in Russia that he met his wife, Tamara Kolb-Chernashovaya, a ballerina with the Bolshoi Ballet. Their romance was quite eventful, she being banished by the Soviet regime twice for being romantically involved with and married to a foreigner. Eventually Gilmore was able to get permission for Tamara to leave the country, and they came to the United States. Gilmore died in 1967, at the age of 60. He and Tamara had three daughters and a son.
