The collection contains a letter written to the U.S. House of Representatives at the beginning of Handley's term as a member of the House, and contains biographical material and information about his election to the House.

Biographical/Historical note

W. A. Handley was a resident of Roanoke, Randolph County, Alabama. He was born at Franklin, Heard County, Georgia, on 15 December 1834. As a young man, he worked for the United States Postal Service in various capacities and later owned several businesses, including a brick company and general store in Roanoke. In addition, he was part owner of the Moore and Handley Hardware Store in Birmingham, Alabama. During the Civil War he served in the Confederate Army as captain of the Twenty-fifth Regiment. He was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-second Congress (4 March 1871- 3 March 1873). He later served in the Alabama State senate from 1888 to 1892 and was a member of the State house of representatives from 1903 to 1907. A delegate to the 1901 Constitutional Convention, Handley died in Roanoke, Alabama, on 23 June 1909.
