Abstract:: This collection contains correspondence, photographs, and other materials created by the Huston family in Selma, Dallas County, Alabama, and extended family in Mobile, Alabama. Most materials center around George Waring Huston, who was killed in World War One.

Scope and Contents note

This collection contains correspondence, photographs, and other materials created by the Huston family in Selma, Dallas County, Alabama. Most materials center around George Waring Huston, who was killed in World War I. Some materials relate to his mother, Nelle Smith Huston, and other family members, including the Hamiltons and Laspleys. A photograph album belonging to Minnie Huston contains 49 photos, and the collection includes 24 additional photos. Many of the photos are identified, and they range in date from the mid-1850s through the 1920s.

A large number of letters are from George Huston to his parents Nelle Smith Huston and R. Walter Huston while at Camp Gordon, Georgia, and in France during World War One. There are a few letters from George to his parents while he was was student at The University of Alabama. Includes a telegram informing his parents of Huston's death and letters of sympathy from friends and relatives. Incoming correspondence to G.W. Huston inlcude letters from his parents and a letter President Denny at The University of Alabama. A folder of miscellaneous items includes George Waring Huston's report card, letter of recommendation, and correspondence concerning application for attendance at second training camp.

Nelle Smith Huston materials include letters written to her from her husband R. Walter Smith, her mother Charlette E. Hamilton, and from her husband R. Walter Huston.

Huston family legal documents include warranty deeds, land deeds, and a tax receipt.

Among the Lapsley family correspondence are letters of congratulations to Nelle Smith Huston from step-grandson George Waring Huston Lapsley.

Peter Hamilton family correspondence senders and recipients include Peter Hamilton, Anna Martha Beers (who later married Peter Hamilton), Hamilton's granddaughter Nelle Smith Huston, and his daughter Charlette Hamilton Smith.
