Biographical/Historical note
Lawyer and jurist, born December 28, 1844 at Louisville, Barbour County, Alabama. Lee served in the Civil War and was captured at Spanish Fort. Postwar he studied law under D. M. Seales at Clayton, Alabama and began practicing law in 1867. He served as mayor of Clayton, solicitor for Barbour County, solicitor for the eighth judicial district, and associate judge of the city court of Gadsden. He was also a trustee of the University of Alabama. He married Lillie Lawrence, December 19, 1865. They had six children: Lawrence Haywood, Vela, William Lovard, Charles W., Henry Fitzhugh, and Alto Vela, Jr.
