Biographical/Historical note

John Gill Shorter was the seventeenth governor of of Alabama, from 1861 to 1863, during the Civil War. An attorney, he was born on 23 April 1818 in Monticello, Georgia, and died on 29 May 1872 in Eufaula, Alabama.
