This collection consists primarily of letters written to his family during the Civil War. Taylor was captured at Port Hudson in July 1863, and many of the letters were composed while a prisoner of war at Johnson's Island, Ohio.

Gift of a friend in Huntsville, 1956
Biographical/Historical note
Taylor served as county surveyor of Madison County, Alabama, 1858-1862 and 1868-1871. During the Civil War he was commissioned as a Captain and served Company K, 9th Alabama Infantry. He taught school for three years following the war, then served as tax assessor. He subsequently served as a circuit court clerk, 1880-1886 and finally as probate judge, 1886-1894.
