Biographical/Historical note

The Alabama Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy was begun when Mrs. Sallie Jones was requested by R. Gaillard, the Commander, and J.F. Foster, Adjutant, of Camp Franklin K. Beck, No. 224, United Confederate Veterans at Camden, Alabama, to organize a Society of Daughters of the Confederacy as an auxiliary to the Camp of Confederate Veterans. She obtained a charter dated 26 March 1886. A chapter at Selma, Alabama, had also been given a charter. A state division (of seven chapters) was formed within the year and the first state convention took place in Alabama in Montgomery on 18 April 1897.

Mrs. C.W. Daugette (Annie Rowan Forney) was a charter member of the General John H. Forney Chapter of Jacksonville, Alabama, which was formed in February 1902. She was the daughter of General Forney for whom the chapter was named. She was the chairman of the “Biographies of Alabama’s Generals in the War Between the States” Committee from its inception in 1938 to the time the biographies were donated to The University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, by the Alabama Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1957.
