Scope and Contents note

This collection contains photocopies of the papers of the Woods and Young families of Alabama. The papers include copies of letters, tax receipts and other legal documents, obituaries, store records, and records of the Shiloh Baptist Church of Christ.

The letters include several from T. M. (Thomas Moore) Woods, J.B. (John B.) Woods and Thompson Gilmer (son-in-law) to T.W. (Thomas Wells) Woods (all addressed to their "Father and Mother") while they served in the C.S. Army. T.M. and J.B. apparently served in the same unit and occasionally wrote their parents a joint letter, or one would append his letter to the brother's letter. There is a photocopy of a letter signed by Captain John H. Bankhead (later Senator), and one from James M. Springfield, Company L, 24th Regiment Mississippi Volunteers.

There are also several tax receipts and other legal documents (including deeds for land inherited by James P. Young), store records from Columbus and Caledonia, Mississippi, and Vernon, Alabama merchants and church records. The church records are those of the Shiloh Baptist Church of Christ where T.W. Woods was clerk, and consist primarily of Letters of Dismission from various churches in Fayette, Marion, Lamar, and St. Clair counties in Alabama and some in Mississippi. There is also a collection of abstracts of various Revolutionary soldiers and families, with unclear relationships to the Woods and Young families, including a large genealogical chart.

Acquisition Information:

Gift of Charles Gilmer, 1989.
