Abstract:

An 1864 deposition by three Kentucky citizens regarding an attempt to assist an escaped slave cross the Ohio River to join the Union Army.

Scope and Contents note

This collection consists of a deposition by Fruit, Burk, and Blangy, attesting to their attendance at a trial in Henderson County, Kentucky, on 3 September 1864, in which three men were tried for trying to assist an escaped slave named "Newton," the property of Archibald Dixon, cross the Ohio River and join the Union Army. Fruit, Burk, and Blangy attest that all three men--J.W. Henderson, G.W. Scott, and Moses Harris--"are unconditional Union men."
