Scope and Contents note

This collection consists of eleven receipts issued between 1847 and 1858 to a free black named Joseph Daugherty, from a variety of merchants and individuals, for buying, selling, or leasing items ranging from cotton and corn to pasturage to a coffee pot. None of the receipts provides any indication of where Daugherty lived. They do however, reveal that he was illiterate, signing an "X" beside his name, and that many of the individuals with whom he did business were barely literate.
