Biographical/Historical note
All letters were sent to J.W. (John Welsey) Newell or immediate family (wife Sadie, son Raymond, daughter Marjorie) in Lima, Ohio. The majority originated in Sherman, New York, and Schenectady, New York. Of the remaining three letters, one was sent from Onarga, Illinois, by Wesley Newell's brother, Amos,(though the envelope containing it is post-stamped Sherman, New York), another from Saratoga, New York, by Marjorie Newell's friend, Marvel, and the third from Califronia (post-stamp illegible) by Wesley Newell's sister, Eudora.
The relationships among the family members, where not clear in the letters' content, is corroborated by the 1900 census.
Scope and Contents note
Contains letters from various family members over three generations sent to the Newell family in Lima, Ohio.
Eight letters (1906-1910) are from a father to his son, J.W. "Wesley" Newell, and family, and discuss the writer's health, the doings of acquaintances in Sherman, New York, and plans for family gatherings. A ninth letter (1909) from the same writer is addressed to his grandson, Raymond Newell, with congratulations regarding a ceremony the grandfather will be unable to attend.
Eleven letters (1917) from a son, Raymond Newell, to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Newell, discuss the writer's life in Schenectady, New York, mostly of social encounters, with business mentioned, along with United States involvement in World War One, "The Birth of a Nation," and boating. Raymond Newell writes one letter on a Purdue University laboratory sheet; also, a telegram about a catalogue and a newspaper clipping about rooms for sale were included in the envelope with another letter.
The six remaining letters are each by individual authors, including Wesley Newell writing to his wife, Sadie, and letters from Wesley's siblings addressed to him. The only letter not from a family member is one addressed to Marjorie Newell, Wesley Newell's daughter, from a girlfriend, Marvel, attending university and describing her activities there.
