Biographical/Historical note
Mary in New York (possibly Harrison) writes to brother Elisha Conklin of Cayuga, New York
Scope and Contents note
Mary in New York wrote to brother Elisha Conklin in Cayuga, New York, requesting a family visit as their sister would soon leave on a long journey. Their sister might have been traveling to California, but the letter is unclear. She also wrote about their family members' or friends' recent departure aboard the Baltic to California. The letter was dated March 12 without a year, but it might have been written at the end of the Gold Rush based on the contents of the letter. The postage stamp on the envelope is a 3-cent stamp introduced in 1853.
