Scope and Contents note
This collection contains 25 pages of legal documents pertaining to a legal settlement of the estate of Lewis L. Marks as ordered by the Probate Court of Lauderdale County in 1857. Included is a packet of documents detailing appraisal and allotment "by ballot" of slaves belonging to Marks.
Biographical/Historical note
Lewis L. Marks was born in Virginia circa 1794. On April 17, 1849, he married Mary, who was born in Tennessee in 1824. Lewis had Virginia and John (born in 1827 and 1829 repsectively) by a previous marriage and one child with Mary, Lewis W.
