Biographical/Historical note

The Holy Spirit Parish began on May 20, 1936, as a land purchase by Archbishop John A. Floersh to be the new parish in the East End of Louisville, Kentucky. In 1937, Father John W. Vance moved into a temporary rectory and immediately began ministering to flood refugees from Louisville's West End, who had been offered shelter by the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville. The first parish Mass was offered on February 21, 1937. Archbishop Floersh blessed the new church on January 2, 1938, and in June 1939, the parish bought the adjoining property with a white frame house that became the rectory. Father Alfred F. Horrigan was ordained in 1940 and served as assistant pastor in Holy Spirit Parish for the next four years. .
