Abstract:

One typewritten letter from Charles Ashton of Guthrie Center, Iowa, to his young grandson Ned Ashton of Knoxville, Iowa. Charles Ashton talked of the new hens bought by Ned's father and instructed Ned to obey his mother and father.

Biographical/Historical note

Charles Ashton (6/2/1823 - ? ) was born in England and emigrated to the United States as a child. He married Mary Haverfield in 1845 and at various times in his life worked as a farmer, preacher, and railroad organizer. Later in life he served on the Iowa Columbian Commission and as the editor of the Guthrian, a Republican weekly newspaper. He and his wife had eleven children, nine of whom survived to adulthood.

Scope and Contents note

Contains one typewritten letter from Charles Ashton, editor of the Guthrian and member of the Iowa Columbian Commission, to his grandson Ned Ashton. Ashton wrote of the hens that Ned's father Henry had recently bought, as well as Ned's recent illness, ending with an admonishment for the young boy to listen to his parents.
