Biographical/Historical note
Elizabeth ("Betty") M. Karcher was the only child of Lonn J. and Lela M. Karcher, born 11 August 1913, in Battle Creek, Michigan. In 1943, she applied for an aircraft drafting course with Vega Aircraft Corporation, a subsidiary of Lockheed Aircraft Company in Pasadena, California. She died on 31 January 1997 in Sedona, Arizona.
Scope and Contents note
The collection contains a postcard from Elizabeth ("Betty") M. Karcher in Alhambra, California, on 19 February 1943, to her family in Battle Creek. Michigan, telling them that she would be starting an aircraft drafting course the following month. She also explains that upon starting the course she would become an employee of a company called Vega Aircraft, a subsidiary of the Lockheed Aircraft Company responsible for much of its parent company's production in World War II. She says that she has to pass a physical exam, an intelligence test, and be accepted by a Vega interviewer.
