Biographical/Historical note

William C. Daisley was a Warrant Officer in the United States Naval Reserves during World War II.

Bernhart Forbau was a Staff Sargeant in the United States Army during World War II.

Robert C. Irwin was a Captain in the Medical Detachment of the U.S. Army 659 F.A. Battalion, during World War II.

Paul Johnson was a Private in the U.S. Army during World War II.

William K. Olson was a Baker, 2nd class, in the 3rd Special U.S. Naval Construction Battalion, A.B.R.B. (Advanced Base Receiving Barracks), during World War II.

Sarah L. Patillo was a 2nd lieutenant, A.W.C., during World War II.

Jack K. Sides was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Corps, during World War II.

Staff Sergeant Bernhart Forbau

Scope and Contents note

Letters written by PFC Bernhart Forbau to his sister and brother-in-law, Olga and George Dellitt. Forbau wrote regularly at least once a week, and in one of his early letters (postmarked December 5, 1942) he explained how to tell where he was stationed - without the censors realizing it. It was a formula based on how the page numbers of his letters were written, and included the use of dashes, dots, and parentheses.
