Scope and Contents note

This sketchbook contains nineteen sketches which depict training drills, camp life, and social events held at Camp O'Neal, a training base located in Frascati Park in Mobile. The 1st Infantry Regiment of Alabama State Troops conducted drills at the park in June 1883. Sergeant F. Zelinski drew the sketches and presented the collection to C. S. Tyler.

Biographical/Historical note

The First Infantry Regiment, stationed in Mobile, Alabama, was one of three regiments that comprised the Alabama State Troops in 1888. The second and third infantries were stationed in Montgomery and Selma, respectively.

The First Infantry Regiment was officially organized in 1881 from several volunteer militia units. The regiment was called to active duty during the Spanish-American War in 1898. It served at the Mexican Border in 1916 and 1917 in response to Pancho Villa's invasion. In September 1917, the regiment became the 123rd U. S. Infantry and was mustered into Federal service at Camp Wheeler, Georgia.
