Biographical/Historical note

The son of James McAdory and Nancy Tucker Sadler, Chambers McAdory was born on April 12, 1834. On October 16, 1861, he married Maria Welton Jordan; the couple had nine children. After his first wife's death, he married Leonora Richardson in 1879. Chambers McAdory was elected to serve as a trustee of School District 139, representing Jonesboro, Alabama. He died on August 21, 1908.

The son of Chambers McAdory and Maria Welton Jordan, Mortimer Jordan McAdory was born in 1861. The University of Alabama Catalog, 1889-1890 lists him as a student studying law. He died in December 1896.

The son of Thomas McAdory and Emily Elmore Owen, Isaac Wellington McAdory was born on September 17, 1843. He married Alice Eulalia Sadler on May 20, 1866 ,and had three sons and two daughters. According to city directory records, he served as the first superintendent of the Jefferson County Board of Education. He died on August 31, 1922.

The son of James Grandison LeRoi Huey and Virginia B. Maclin, Benjamin Maclin Huey was born in Talladega, Alabama, on June 15, 1840. He married Sarah Elizabeth King in 1863. He died on May 26, 1906.

The daughter of Eugene Leroy Huey and Mattie McAdory and the granddaughter of Benjamin Maclin Huey and Sarah Elizabeth King, Sarah King Huey was born on October 24, 1909 in Bessemer, Alabama. She married Barney Maxie Lewis on November 4, 1939. According to city directory records, she was the Vice-President of E. L. Huey Furniture Company. She died in March 1984.

Scope and Contents note

This collection contains ledgers, correspondence, and manuscripts written by members of the McAdory and Huey families of Bessemer, Marion, and Talladega, Alabama. Notable items include an 1896 Memorial Day speech written by Mortimer Jordan McAdory; meeting minutes and correspondence from Birmingham School District 139 compiled by Isaac Wellington McAdory and Chambers McAdory and dated from 1904 to 1906; an 1863 letter written by B. M. Huey; a 1929 literature paper written by Sarah King Huey; and a handwritten copy of Daniel Webster's March 7, 1850, speech denouncing secession. The collection also contains three photographs of unidentified individuals; two ledgers with handwritten entries and newspaper clippings dated from 1869 to 1905; and two smaller weather diaries with entries dated from 1887 to 1890.
