Biographical/Historical note

The Mechanics' Hook and Ladder Company is one of the oldest volunteer firefighter companies in Montgomery, Alabama. The earliest company, Dexter Company One, was founded in 1848. The Mechanics' Hook and Ladder Company and the Alabama Company were established shortly afterwards.

The city purchased its first horse-drawn steamer engine in the 1870s. By 1887, the city boasted five volunteer companies and four fire stations; the Alabama Company and the Mechanics' Hook and Ladder Company shared a station on Madison Avenue.

In 1898, the city founded a paid fire department, consisting of four companies.

Scope and Contents note

This collection contains two ledgers and approximately seventy-five vouchers written by the Montgomery, Alabama, Mechanics' Hook and Ladder Company.

The vouchers, dated between 1897 and 1899, document the company's purchases and include requests for payments to the Mongtomery Journal, the Montgomery Advertiser, and the Highland Park Green House. The small ledger records the company's account with the Capital City Insurance Company and includes entries from April 1889 to January 1899. The larger ledger documents the company's general expenses, containing entries from June 1864 to January 1899. This ledger lists the salaries of the company's driver and tillerman, as well as the purchase of general office supplies and horses.
