Biographical/Historical note

The son of William Thomas Norville and Anna O' Connor, Edward R. Norville was born on January 2, 1855, in Navy Cove, a community in Baldwin County, Alabama. Mobile, Alabama, city directories list Norville as a Lower Bay Pilot, a river pilot steering and towing ships through the waters near Mobile. Norville died on July 8, 1891, in Mobile.

Scope and Contents note

The collection contains the diary of Mobile, Alabama, river pilot Edward R. Norville, with entries dated 1873 to 1891, with the bulk of the entries dated between 1880 and 1891. Many of the entries are brief and written in a list format, recording the names of ships that Norville piloted or towed, weather conditions along the river, and Norville's personal expenses. In the back of the diary, he writes longer and more personal entries, discussing his romantic life, describing trips home to Navy Cove, Alabama, and writing poetry.
