Scope and Contents note

This letter from C. I. B. DeLage, a Mobile, Alabama, commission agent, written after the end of the Civil War, details the financial ruin of businesses and businessmen in Mobile due to the devaluation of the Confederate currency and the surrender of the city to Union forces at the end of the war. DeLage writes to Carl G. Schneider, a friend and business partner, that he (Schneider) left just in time to avoid the worst of the financial collapse. DeLage also provides a statement signed by other businessmen in the city that the description in the letter about what occurred was a true and accurate accounting of the facts.
